According to World Health Organization, tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 known chemicals, with at least 40 that cause cancer. It also includes large quantities of carbon monoxide, a gas that hinders the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to vital organs such as the heart and brain, and substances that contribute to heart disease and stroke.
Long-term exposure to second-hand smoke causes lung cancer, coronary heart disease and cardiac death. The risk of coronary heart disease is increased by 25%–30% and lung cancer by 20%–30%.
Objective: Test the bipolar ionization (BPI) effect in removing cigarette smoke and smell in comparing with another IAQ device
TEST SETUP
Mechanism:
Installed Monitair bipolar ionizer and negative ions device in rooms A and B, respectively, installed air quality monitors to detect the changes of air quality in the two rooms
Smoke one cigarette in Room A and B respectively, the cigarette using in the experiment is normal cigarette
Compare the air quality (PM 2.5 and TVOC) changes in Room A and B before and after smoking
FINDINGS
(1) Ions Level (Data Support)
In the room with bipolar ionizer, ions level increased by 10 times
The ions concentration reach 7000 ions or above have sterilization and pollutant treatment effects.
(2) PM 2.5 (Data support)
In Room A, after adoption of bipolar ionizer device, PM 2.5dropped 77% after 100 minutes and returned to the level before smoking
High airflow is necessary to bring ions around the indoor space when using bipolar ionizer
Bipolar ionizer does not release ozone, having low power consumption and easy installation
In Room B, after using the Negative Ions device, PM2.5 dropped 81% after 55 minutes and returned to the level before smoking
Negative Ions device included a built-in fan
However, Negative Ions device releases harmful by-product: ozone. Installation is more complicated as it is using three-phase electrical power supply
(3) TVOC (Data support)
In Room A, since the entire space has been filled with ions, it can provide immediate protection and remove TVOC, maintained TVOC at normal level
TVOC level during the entire period before smoking to after smoking are within normal levels.
In Room B, TVOC increased rapidly after smoking and significantly improved after using Negative Ions device.
However, TVOC level during the entire period before and after smoking cannot within normal levels.
